Payne left the University of Kentucky after his sophom*ore season in 1971 to play for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association.
After being released from prison in 1983, he played for the Louisville Catbirds of the Continental Basketball Association before starting his career as a boxer. Associated Prtss LOS ANGELES Thomas Payne, a former University of Kentucky basketball player who had started a boxing career in recent years, was being held Sunday for investigation of rape and parole violation, police said. Payne, 35, was paroled in 1983 from the Kentucky State Reformatory after serving 11 years of a life conviction for rape and sodomy. The 7-foot-l, 275-pound Payne allegedly accosted a woman in her 30s while she was parking her car in the Hollywood area early Friday, according to police detective Richard Wittner. The woman's screams were heard by a neighbor, who telephoned police, Wittner said.
After Payne was taken into custody and booked for investigation of rape, authorities learned he was being sought by Kentucky authorities for alleged parole violation, Wittner said. That can only mean bad news for Seventh Region teams, because last Saturday the 6-3 junior had career highs of 32 points and 15 rebounds in a 68-65 triumph over Atherton.
"People haven't seen the true Mike Hall yet" Hottman said. "He'll be a super player next season. The real Mike Hall started to come out Saturday night I think he's the best guard prospect In the state, in the junior class." Hall hit 9 of 19 field-goal tries and 14 of 17 free throws to boost his average to 17.9 points a game. He scored 27 against Central, and he tallied 22 on five other occasions, including games against good clubs like Male and Seneca. J'town is 10-8 overall and 3-0 since losing its top scorer and re-bounder when Sean McGruder became academically ineligible.
McGruder was averaging 16.5 points and nine rebounds and shooting 62 percent from the field. "Mike Hall volunteered to move from guard to forward and take McGruder's place," said Hottman. "We don't have any size and we need him there. "Mike's starting to mature," Hottman said. "The first of the year, he tried to do too much.
He tried to be a one-on-one player. Now, he's blending in with the team. He's to be a better player once he learns to give up the ball, work to get open and play better defense." J'town plays host to Western (11-7) at 6 o'clock tonight Waggener has two of the best young players in the Seventh Region in 6-2 junior Connis Bell and 6-2 sophom*ore Rick Henry. Bell is averaging 18.2 points and Henry 17.9. Yet Waggener has won only five of 18 games.
"We can't get consistent play out of our other three kids who play with Bell and Henry," said Waggener coach Rob Driggers. "But we'll have everybody back next year. Our younger program is coming along real good." Doss, the Sixth Region champion the past two years, has won six straight games to raise its record to 12-7. "We moved Charlie (Mudd) to point guard six games ago. He had been playing on the wing on offense and down low on defense," Doss coach Leon Mudd said about his son.
"Charlie was the only one getting the ball to Brandy Monks (a 6-6 junior). Now, Charlie gets the ball to everybody. He's averaging eight assists a game." This season, with Hall out and Sutton in, Issel has viewed most of UK's home games from a seat only four rows behind the Wildcats' bench. But he hasn't seen much of Lock, who until recently was only the third or fourth player into a game.
Of course, as the Wildcats have clawed their way to a 22-3 record, Lock also gave Sutton no reason to change his unorthodox three-guard starting lineup. But about 10 days ago, Sutton noticed a change in Lock. So did Lock. So, the Wildcats hope, will UK's fu ture opponents, beginning with Florida Wednesday night in Rupp Arena. What happened? "I've been wanting to play, believe me, but for some reason my intensity level just picked up. I had one good day of practice and then just began to follow it up." In Saturday's 88-62 victory over Mississippi State, Lock came off the bench to score nine points (3 of 3 from the field, 3 of 4 from the line) in 10 minutes. Nobody was happier than Sutton, who knows that UK will need as much size and depth as it can muster in the NCAA Tournament "For a while, I didn't think Rob understood what it takes," Sutton said. "But now he has that determination. He just needs to improve in all areas." Which is where Issel comes In.
Coincidentally, Lock has begun to emerge at just about the same point -52 -50 17 12 14 7 LAWRENCE COUNTY, At WEST -34 -17 At Lawrence County Horn Wheeler 17, Ratllff IX Shannon IX Akers I West Carter Brown IX Oney IX Jordan 10, Porter Fisher 13 Campbellsvllle K. Of course, the only number in which Lock can match Issl is the one he wears on his jersey. And chances are he never will have the outside touch or mobility that made Issel so tough tor even the Abdul-Jabbars to stop. But Lock does have the size, potential and intelligence to become a bet-ter-than-average college center.
And no doubt Issel could help him enormously in such areas as moving without the ball, posting up, using a head fake, going to the hoop, taking a charge, setting a pick and blocking out Even more important, Issel can show Lock that hard work and discipline will, in the long run, be more important than natural ability. How else to explain how Issel scored all those points, both at UK and in the pros? So many others were bigger, quicker, stronger and better jumpers. But nobody nobody was smarter, tougher or more determined. "Dan Issel Is Just a great person," said Sutton, "and he would do anything for this program. He talked to (high school signee) Rex Chapman for us.
We're going to call on him, believe me." Lock will have to understand that Issel will be able to work in tutoring sessions only when he's not busy at the farm planning breedings, supervising foalings and preparing yearlings for the sales. That's fine with Lock. Why, perhaps he'll even become so interested in the breeding business that he can become "Horse 1A" in what would be an Interesting hoops entry. "It would be great" said Lock, "to have somebody like Mr. Issel help trie." 19, Sumner 11, Mays IX Radford S.
