State Editions 36 E.B 12 THE COURIER-JOURNAL, SUNDAY, APRIL 8, 1984 Lexington fire officials warn of kerosene mix-up Associated Press LEXINGTON, Ky. The Lexington Fire Department says people who recently purchased kerosene from a CSC Service Station at the Lexington Mall may have gotten gasoline instead. The department issued the warning after a fire Thursday night that started when someone mistakenly used the gasoline in a kerosene heater, said Maj. Jim Sallee of the Fire Prevention Division. Jerry Ward, whose house was damaged heavily in the fire, said the mix-up arose Tuesday night when his wife went to the self-serve station to get kerosene.
The kerosene nozzle was missing on a pump that dispensed both unleaded gasoline kerosene, Sallee said. The pump wasn't marked incorrectly, he said. Ward said his wife apparently misread the labels and picked up the wrong nozzle. The Ward's two children were at home alone when the incident occurred, Ward said, but escaped safely. Fire officials have asked people concerned about kerosene bought at the station to contact the fire department.
Sallee said several calls have been received, no further mix-ups have been found.
