NEW YORK – Following a 77-57 loss to UConn, Indiana concludes the Empire Classic with a matchup against Louisville in the third-place game.

Indiana shot just 37.8% on Sunday against UConn, whose guards got the best of the Hoosiers. Louisville guards Skyy Clark and Tre White combined for 40 points, but Texas guard Max Abmas hit a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer, handing Louisville an 81-80 loss.

Meet the coaches

  • Kenny Payne, Louisville:Payne is in his second season at Louisville with a 6-30 overall record and a 2-18 mark in ACC play. Prior to Louisville, Payne was an assistant coach for the New York Knicks from 2020-22 and an assistant coach under John Calipari at Kansas from 2010-20. Payne played at Louisville from 1986-89, helping the Cardinals win the 1986 national championship. He was the 19th overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
  • Mike Woodson, Indiana: Woodson is in his third season at Indiana with a 47-27 overall record and a 21-19 mark in regular season Big Ten play. Woodson has NBA head coaching experience with the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and the New York Knicks from 2012-14. Woodson played at Indiana University from 1976-80, and was named the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player as a senior under coach Bob Knight. He was the 12th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, and played for various teams from 1980-91, averaging 14 points over 786 games.
